Illustrative conceptFollowing the path
A business network is a chain, and it is only as strong as its weakest link.
- Internet: your service provider hands over connectivity at the edge of your premises.
- Fiber: fiber links carry that connectivity over long runs, between buildings and floors.
- Router: manages internet access and security at the edge of the network.
- Switches: distribute the network to every room, desk, camera and access point.
- Server racks: keep servers, recorders and network equipment organised and serviceable.
- Devices: computers, phones, Wi-Fi users, cameras and attendance systems.
LAN, CAN and Wi-Fi
A LAN (local area network) connects devices within a building. A CAN (campus area network) links several buildings, such as a school or factory campus. Wi-Fi extends the network wirelessly, and coverage depends on planning access points around your floor plan and users.
Common problems a plan avoids
- Untidy cabling that makes faults slow to trace
- Wi-Fi dead spots in rooms that need coverage most
- Switches without enough capacity for cameras and new devices
